Veritas girls fall to Christ Prep

? Veritas Christian’s girls basketball team has struggled with rebounding all season, and it was no different against Christ Prep Academy on Thursday night.

The Eagles were outsized and outrebounded in a 72-52 loss at Eudora Middle School.

“It killed us today. We know it’s something that’s going to be a challenge all year for us,” Veritas coach Kevin Shelton said. “I really feel like we can do better than we did tonight.”

But even with all of the problems on the glass, Veritas (3-2) used a 12-3 run midway through the third quarter to cut the score to 47-41 after trailing by six at halftime. In the stretch, sophomore Tori Huslig scored eight of her team-high 20 points and sophomore Alyssa Krestan added four points.

“Alyssa, Tori and Emma (Wilson), you know, we rode as much as we could,” Shelton said of his three players that combined for 39 points. “We missed a lot of easy shots when we got them. Just a difficult night for us shooting.”

After leading by eight heading into the fourth quarter, Christ Prep (8-3) went on a 19-7 run over the first five minutes of the final period. Veritas tried a full-court press, but the Patriots frequently passed around it and took advantage of the buckets in transition.

“We just seemed a step slow defensively,” Shelton said.

Krestan finished with 13 points, while senior Macie Dressler added five points and sophomore Delaeny Shelton had four.

The Eagles will return to the court after winter break.
