Free State girls go to 4-0 with win over Lansing

? Free State High’s girls basketball team raised its record to 4-0 with a 59-51 victory over Lansing on Saturday.

Madison Piper led the Firebirds with 16 points, Sarah Coversup added 13 points, and Jaycie Bishop scored 10.

Free State trailed 18-10 after one quarter but outscored Lansing in each of the next three quarters, including 17-8 in the third.

Free State will host city rival Lawrence High at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Topeka Heritage 45, Veritas 38

Eudora — Veritas Christian Academy’s girls basketball team suffered its first loss of the season.

Veritas head coach Kevin Shelton credited Heritage Christian for hitting timely shots when VCA would begin to cut into the lead, but cited his team’s defensive effort as the main reason for the loss.

“We had several breakdowns defensively,” Shelton said. “Every time we would make a run, they would make a big shot.”

Tori Huslig led Veritas with 18 points.

Veritas (3-1) will try to bounce back against Christ Prep at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Sophomore Mikey Wycoff and freshman Zach McDermott combined for 52 points to lead Bishop Seabury Academy’s boys basketball team past Axtell.

The Seahawks clamped down defensively to jump out to a 20-6 advantage after the first quarter and stayed consistent on offense from wire to wire.

“We were sharing the ball and hitting our shots,” Seabury coach Ashley Battles said.

Wycoff scored 27 points, and McDermott added 25 points for the Seahawks.

BSA remains undefeated at 3-0 and will not play again until Jan. 9 at Mount Vernon (Missouri).
