“Magnum Contact Sheets” by Kristen Lubben, Thames & Hudson

Less expensive edition of this 2011 release (currently under $50 on Amazon.com) features 139 contact sheets — a series of photos from one shoot and of one subject — from Magnum Photo agency photographers, including Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa and Elliott Erwitt. The contact sheets display famous images alongside many of the outtakes.

“Photographers’ Sketchbooks” by Stephen McLaren, Thames & Hudson

Forty-three photographers discuss their work and describe various techniques and technologies the use. The book includes interviews, working methods and explores the creative process.

“The Photographer’s Playbook: 307 Assignments and Ideas,” various, Aperture

In a book with few photographs, 307 photographers and photo-educators list exercises, assignments and ideas to inspire everyone in the craft of photography. It’s more a book on the creative approach to photography than a how-to book.

Photojojo.com is a fun website that offers dozens of gift ideas for photographers. Here are three that could fit under my tree:

• The Camalapse: a rotating stand to take time-lapse video with your iPhone, Android or compact camera. Rotates a full 360 degrees in an hour with no batteries required, $30.

• The Olloclip 4-in-1 Lens: fits on an iPhone or iPad and provides fish-eye, wide-angle and two macro ranges of lens coverage, $70

• Une Bobine: a 2-foot-long, bendable USB phone charging cable and tripod in one. Bend it, flex it, wrap it. It holds its shape for unique positioning of the phone while charging or taking videos and photos. $35 for iPhones, $20 for Androids.

Lastly, I want to remind everyone that any photograph in the newspaper or online taken by a Journal-World staffer can be ordered as a reprint. Costs vary depending on reprint size, print finish and whether you choose to have it framed.

To order, locate the photograph you want online at LJWorld.com. The best way to do this is by knowing the date of publication or date the photo was taken.

Once you locate a photograph you wish to order, click on the image to enlarge it and then click on the blue “Buy a print of this photo” link just beneath the photo on the right. You will be taken to the MyCapture Company order page, where you can follow the directions to order the print to your liking.
