Seahawks seek to tap their potential

The calendar recently flipped to December, and that means it’s time for the start of the Bishop Seabury basketball seasons.

Here is a look at the Seahawks’ basketball teams for the upcoming season:

Boys basketball

Fifth-year coach Ashley Battles knows the Bishop Seabury boys basketball team has the potential to win a lot of games this year.

The Seahawks, ranked No. 7 in the preseason coaches poll, bring back plenty of talent from last season’s 14-7 team that lost in the sub-state finals.

Sophomore point guard Mikey Wycoff is expected to lead the team, after averaging 18.5 points per game last season. Seabury will also have junior forward Thomas Uhler and senior guard Bryce Copeland.

Add in freshman guards Zach McDermott and Bonsi King, and the Seahawks will be tough to stop through their guard play.

“This should be the most skilled backcourt we’ve had at Seabury — as well as the deepest backcourt,” Battles said. “We have five guys that can really handle and pass the ball, and we have five guys that can really shoot the ball.”

The Seahawks don’t have much size other than the 6-foot-3 Uhler, but they are working on communication and help defense to limit opposing big men.

Seabury opens the year with three homes games, starting at 7:30 p.m. today against Heritage Christian.

Girls basketball

Bishop Seabury’s girls basketball team features three stars, but is still working on adding some depth.

The Seahawks will be led by senior forward Reilly Malone, junior guard Regan Zaremba and sophomore guard Celia Taylor-Puckett. Malone nearly averaged a double-double last year with nine points and 10 rebounds per game.

“This team will lean on Reilly Malone’s play inside, and the guard play of Regan and Cilia,” first-year coach Ted Juneau said.

Seabury is hoping to get contributions from junior forward Tanisha Kaur and sophomore guard Kayleigh Boos, but the Seahawks are working on trying to add depth in case of injuries or foul trouble.

The Seahawks will face Heritage Christian in their season opener at 5:30 p.m. today at Seabury.
