Lawrence police arrest 18-year-old in armed car theft

The Lawrence Police Department apprehended an 18-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly stole an SUV at gunpoint and fled from police on foot.

Detective Sgt. Bronson Star of the LPD said police were called to the 500 block of Florida Street at 5:43 p.m. for a robbery in progress. The victim told police he was about to climb into his SUV when the suspect approached him with a gun and commandeered the vehicle.

Shortly after, police located the vehicle unoccupied in the 1800 block of West Second Street, and a police officer spotted a man matching the suspect’s description near the intersection of Fourth and Florida streets, Star said. After a foot chase, the suspect was apprehended in the 400 block of Michigan Street about 6:00 p.m.

A K-9 unit from the Topeka Police Department assisted in locating the gun, which had been left on the ground in an area the suspect had run through, Star said.

The victim was a 37-year-old Lawrence man, Star said, who did not know the suspect and was not injured in the incident.
