Ziegler sets record; Firebirds swimmers win opener

Free State's Brandon Bunting dives off the block as he and his teammates compete in the Boys 200 Yard Medley Relay on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2014 at Free State High School.

Free State High senior swimmer Jack Ziegler entered the season with his eyes set on the 50-yard freestyle school record. He wasn’t far behind it at the end of last year when he took 10th at state in the event.

When he started swimming on Wednesday, in the first meet of the season, he knew he was feeling well enough to have a shot at it. But when he looked at the times on the scoreboard, that’s when the celebration began. He shattered the mark with a time of 21.64, breaking the old record (21.92) that was set by Chris Wolff in 2004.

Ziegler’s record performance was one of the many highlights for the Free State boys swimming and diving team in its season-opening victory in the FSHS quadrangular at the Indoor Aquatic Center. The Firebirds won seven of the 12 events.

“It was pretty awesome,” said Ziegler, who also took first place in the 100 freestyle. “I’ve had my eye on that record for a long time, so it’s nice to finally get it.”

Ziegler, who qualified for state in both events he won, celebrated with teammates on the pool deck after he touched the wall and he looked up to see his time.

The Firebirds won all three relays, and also picked up victories from Ethan Kallenberger in the 100 backstroke and Sydney Lin in the 100 breaststroke.

“Jack and I both train year-round,” said Kallenberger, who noted he’s improved his form since last season. “It’s just helped both of us because not only are we able to stay in shape but we’re able to chisel away at our times.”

Free State was also boosted by strong performances from Brett Carey in the 200 individual medley (second place), diver Chad Bourdon (second place) and Cooper Schmiedeler in the 200 freestyle (third place).

“I was thrilled with the team today,” FSHS coach Annette McDonald said. “The guys stepped up. They swam faster than some of their times last year.”

Lawrence High’s boys swimming and diving team took second place in the quad, with 383 points, just behind Free State’s 421.

Freshman Stephen Johnson dominated in his races, winning in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Isaac Springe also added a victory in the 200 individual medley and Alex Heckman took second place in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

The Lions kept the score close with Free State throughout the meet, which showed the progress they’ve made since last season.

“I was pretty proud of us,” said junior Chase Odgers, who took third in the 100 butterfly. “Last year, we didn’t do this well all year pretty much. In the first meet, we come out and get two relays qualified (for state).”

With the boost of some talented newcomers, the Lions have the star power to compete for victories at meets.

“We’re probably about where we were at the end of the season last year,” LHS coach Kent McDonald said. “It’s everybody. Even the new guys are stepping up and doing really well, so I’m pretty happy with it.”

Both schools will compete in the Manhattan Invitational on Wednesday.
