Prosecutors charged Ricky Alan McConnell, 53, of Lawrence, with three counts of aggravated burglary and two counts of attempted theft Tuesday in connection with a string of home burglaries in Lawrence this week.

McConnell is alleged to have first entered an unlocked, occupied home around 9:30 a.m. Sunday at 1046 Tennessee St., where he began “rummaging around,” Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Tuesday. One of the residents came downstairs after hearing the noise and reportedly saw him attempt to hide behind a door before running from the residence, McKinley said.

The resident called police, but police could not find McConnell on Sunday. Though they did not make an arrest that night, officers discovered the suspect had collected five bottles of alcohol and an Xbox 360 in an apparent attempt to remove them from the home, McKinley said.

McConnell was arrested early Tuesday afternoon after a caller reported around 11:45 a.m. that his home had just been burglarized and that he had watched the suspect run to and enter a home at 1408 Kentucky St., McKinley said.

Police then arrested McConnell inside 1408 Kentucky, where “some of the seven tenants” of the home were still inside, McKinley said. McConnell had filled a trash bag with an Xbox 360, a Playstation 1 game console, a Playstation 2 game console, 42 assorted video games and a three-pound bag of Tyson chicken taken from the refrigerator, McKinley said.

McConnell was found hiding behind a door in one of the bedrooms, McKinley said.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set McConnell’s bond at $40,000. McConnell remained in the Douglas County Jail Tuesday. His next court appearance is set for Monday.
