25 years ago: KU parking employees take initiative in decorating booths

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 2, 1989:

Employees of Kansas University’s Parking Department this year were putting up rather elaborate decorations inside their four traffic control booths, a new move in campus Christmas decorating. “Someone said at the meeting, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to decorate the booths?’ And so we just decided to do it,” said Rita Jordan about the decision that had been made about a month earlier. “People are coming up and asking ‘Why haven’t you done this before?’ and saying that it really looks nice.” Jordan said the full-time employees had brought decorations and set them up in the booths, with the part-time student employees adding their own touches with streamers, bells, and ribbons. Although there had not been a rule against decorating the booths, it had simply never been done before. “I think everyone just assumed that decorating wasn’t allowed,” Jordan said. “When the booths were built 28 years ago, the rules for the employees were very strict.” Employee morale was likely to be improved with the tinsel and tiny trees, she added. “When you’re in there for eight hours a day, that booth becomes your little home,” Jordan explained.
