Douglas County Law Library renamed to honor retiring judge Michael Malone

Retiring Douglas County District Court Judge Michael Malone’s presence won’t be entirely gone from the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center at 11th and Massachusetts streets.

The trustees of the law library that is housed inside the judicial center have renamed the library the Michael J. Malone Douglas County Law Library.

Malone retired from his Douglas County court position on Friday after having served as a judge for 32 years in the district court. The trustees of the law library announced the name change at a Thursday evening reception for Malone. Malone also was to be honored at a public reception Friday afternoon at the Douglas County Courthouse.

Malone — who is scheduled to temporarily serve as a senior judge on the Kansas Supreme Court until newly appointed Justice Caleb Stegall is sworn in — was the driving force behind the creation of the law library in 2001, the library’s board said.
