Letter: Sex attitudes

To the editor:

In the Aug. 21 editorial, “Campus sex,” the Journal-World calls for a change in culture, related to attitudes toward sexual harassment and assault.

I believe there’s another attitudinal change that is warranted, which could go a long way to reducing sexual harassment and assault. That would be a greater appreciation of sex in its proper context.

Sex is downgraded when it is “joked” that the Jayhawk statue in front of Strong Hall will fly away if a virgin graduates. It is undervalued when the University Daily Kansan publishes its “Sex on the Hill” supplement. Of course, they always include the one article about sexual abstinence until marriage, but as a part of the entire issue, that choice receives little acknowledgment and affirmation. And when our hatred for all things Missouri suggests that we mk Fizzou, how can we, in the same breath, say we are against harassment and assault?

Let’s go back to the beginning if we want a different ending.
