40 years ago: KU enrollment reaches historic high

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 28, 1974:

  • Kansas University’s Lawrence campus enrollment was forecast to pass 20,000 for the first time in KU history. Preliminary figures released today estimated 20,173 student in Lawrence and 1,725 at the Medical Center in Kansas City. Speaking for himself and Chancellor Archie Dykes, KU executive vice chancellor Del Shankel today said, “We’re both exceptionally well pleased. This indicates renewed confidence of the citizens of this state in the university.”
  • B. A. Green Construction Co. this week submitted the low bid for construction of the new county-city judicial and law enforcement building. The base bid was $3,963.000. A recent architect’s estimate had been $3.8 million. The next lowest bid was $3,968,730 from the Casson Construction Co. of Topeka. Four other bids had come in, all above $4.2 million.
  • The 32 speeders convicted the previous week in Lawrence Municipal Court had paid $384 in fines, an increase from the 21 speeders and $288 in fines in the week ending Aug. 16. Thirty other traffic convictions had resulted in fines of $820.50 and four jail sentences, all suspended. Three men had been convicted for driving while intoxicated, two persons had been fined for reckless driving, seven had been convicted of traffic signal violations, and five for driving vehicles with expired registrations. One man had been fined $1 for not wearing eye protection while operating a motorcycle, and another man had been fined $5 for operating a vehicle with defective brakes.
