$50,000 bond set for man charged in connection with Tuesday high-speed chase

A $50,000 bond was set Wednesday for a 38-year-old Lawrence man who was arrested after allegedly leading Douglas County Sheriff’s deputies and the Kansas Highway Patrol on a high-speed chase Tuesday that ended in a soybean field.

Brien Keith Hickman is charged with criminal damage to property, driving with a suspended or revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving and two counts of attempting to flee a police officer.

Hickman was driving a Jeep Cherokee Tuesday morning when a deputy attempted to pull him over for speeding, but he refused to stop, Douglas County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Lt. Steve Lewis said. The deputy eventually lost sight of the Jeep as it headed south of Lawrence, Lewis said.

In the early afternoon a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper located the Jeep near Lawrence Memorial Hospital, State Trooper Don Hughes said. Hickman also failed to stop for the trooper, who then pursued the Jeep throughout town, Hughes said. The highway patrol eventually was able to stop the jeep and arrest the driver in a field southwest of town, Lewis said.

Hickman was scheduled to appear Wednesday afternoon before Douglas County District Judge James T. George, but refused to leave his jail cell, said Cheryl Wright Kunard, assistant to the Douglas County District Attorney.

For that reason, Kunard said, George considered Hickman’s first appearance waived and scheduled his next court appearance for Thursday.
