25 years ago: Water main break closes portion of Ninth Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 25, 1989:

  • A one-block section of Ninth Street near Murrow Court was closed to traffic today and was possibly going to be blocked for up to 10 days following a water main break. City utilities workers said the main had ruptured at about 5:15 p.m. the previous evening, and city officials this morning were trying to determine the extent of the damage to Ninth Street. “It caused some structural damage to the street,” said Mike Wildgen, assistant city manager. “They’re talking about resurfacing it … but it’s not just a simple overlay repair job. We have to be careful of the water that might be underneath the base.”
  • Nearly 2.75 billion miles from Earth, the 12-year-old space probe Voyager 2 passed over Neptune’s north pole and today made its closest approach to the moon Triton, sending pictures to Earth of an ancient ice volcano and other details of the terrain. “This is it — we are exploring new worlds!” said an excited laboratory astronomer Rich Terrile. Neptune “is not a gee-whiz, science-fiction, special effects movie. It’s a real place.” “This is a historic occasion,” added Lennard Fisk, an associate administrator of NASA. “It’s the last time we’re seeing a planet for the first time. We’ve completed the reconnaissance of the planets, except Pluto.” Two Kansas University professors said the closest images of Neptune would help scientists learn more about the solar system.
