40 years ago: Eudora board meets to discuss new library plans

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 23, 1974:

  • The Eudora library board met for the first time this week with its advisory group for a new library project. The meeting included discussion of library plans, a slideshow of other libraries in the area, and a questionnaire on the services a new library should provide. One question raised was whether the new library should have a basement, which had originally been considered for meetings and group activities. One problem with that idea, according to board chair C. Alden Fleming, was that the basement would duplicate facilities already available in the community. It was noted that the additions under way at Nottingham School would include a community area.
  • Eleven bicycles had been stolen the previous day from racks at Kansas University’s McCollum and Lewis residence hall. KU Security estimated the loss at $1,143. Nine bikes valued at $883 had been taken from a rack east of Lewis and two valued at $260 had been stolen from McCollum’s rack. The bikes had been locked, but each lock had reportedly been cut.
