25 years ago: Local developer to submit plan for municipal golf course

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 23, 1989:

  • Lawrence city commissioners, who had received a municipal golf course proposal in July, learned this week that local developer Bob Billings was planning to submit his own public golf course plan. In recent talks with city officials, Billings had raised the idea of making his latest layout west of Wakarusa Drive a public course. Mayor Bob Schumm instructed city staff to ask Billings to be ready to make a formal presentation as soon as possible. Last month, First Golf Corp. a Denver-based firm, had given the commission two layouts of an 18-hole course it proposed to build at Banning Corner near Clinton Lake on land controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
  • Some female Kansas University students who resided at Corbin Hall were greeted by remodeling as they arrived on campus this week. Signs posted in the building, illustrated with a drawing of a cute bear, read: “Please bear with us. Your improvements will soon be complete. The hall, KU’s oldest, had opened in 1923 and was undergoing a $1.4 million renovation. Meanwhile, housing officials said KU’s residence halls were all full, with only a few of the 4,700 residents in temporary housing.
