Editorial: Fun weekend

Downtown Lawrence will be hopping this weekend with fun entertainers and talented musicians.

People looking for some entertainment and activity in Lawrence this weekend shouldn’t have any trouble.

The city already is hopping with the return of Kansas University students preparing to start the fall semester next week, and some signature annual events will draw thousands of people to downtown Lawrence today through Sunday.

The Lawrence Busker Fest — back for its seventh year — has become a popular attraction for both local residents and out-of-town visitors. About 25 acts are confirmed for the event, which opens tonight and will continue from 2:45 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

There will be a lot of things going on downtown that don’t usually go on downtown. People will be juggling, doing acrobatics and eating fire. Poets, comedians, musicians and other performers will be in the streets and on the sidewalks sharing their talents.

There’s something for everyone at this event, which is a unique treat for audiences of all ages.

The Kansas State Fiddling and Picking Championships have joined forces with the Busker Festival sponsoring musical performances Friday evening and Saturday afternoon in the 1000 block of Massachusetts. For a slightly more laid-back experience, visitors can stroll down to South Park on Sunday for the official competition which begins at noon.

The fiddling and picking event has an even longer history in Lawrence. This is the 34th championship, held every year at the end of August in Lawrence. Competitions are scheduled for fiddles, banjos, guitars and mandolins, and the park will be filled with music both on and off the designated stages.

We know it’s August and your air conditioner is calling, but it’s a special weekend in Lawrence. Grab your lawn chair and something cold to drink and come join the fun.
