40 years ago: Price increase approved for school lunches

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 20, 1974:

  • The Lawrence District 497 Board of Education agreed reluctantly this week to a five-cent increase in secondary and adult lunch prices, effective immediately. Secondary lunch prices were to increase from 50 cents to 55 cents and adult prices were to increase from 60 cents to 65 cents. Elementary student lunches were to remain at 45 cents. Board member Kenneth Anderson, who had voted against the increase, said he knew it was necessary but that he protested any increases being passed on to parents. “It’s got to be done, but we have to watch every dime of expenditure. It’s far from being a free public education,” he said. In other business, the board agreed to buy a portable building from First National Bank at a cost of $5,000 to supplement classroom space at West Junior High. Another portable building was to be moved from its location at the high school to West to accommodate a learning disabilities program.
  • Hoch Auditorium opened its doors at 9 a.m. this morning for Kansas University students to pick up enrollment and auto registration materials, the first step in a multi-day enrollment process. About 17,500 students were due to enroll this week on the Lawrence campus.
  • President Ford today nominated Nelson A. Rockefeller to be vice president, saying the former New York governor would be “a good partner for our country and the world.” The president’s choice was to be forwarded to Congress for their approval, where House and Senate leaders said they anticipated no delay in the confirmation.
