Man jumps into Kansas river in attempt to elude police

A man reportedly jumped into the Kansas river in an attempt to elude police early Sunday.

Police attempted to stop a white Ford Explorer on the north side of downtown Lawrence shortly after 1:40 Sunday morning.

The driver abandoned the vehicle near the 500 block of Vermont and ran along the riverbank. As officers approached, he reportedly jumped into the river.

Officers immediately requested a response from Lawrence Fire to launch boats and attempt to rescue the man.

The water rescue response was canceled after officers were able to pull the man out of the water.

The man was taken into custody without further incident.

Police have not said what led to the brief vehicle pursuit.
