25 years ago: Armed robbers hold up local eatery

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 11, 1989:

  • The latest in a rash of armed robberies at local businesses had struck a small eatery in the middle of town. A man wielding a handgun and wearing a pantyhose mask had entered Pup’s Grill, 847 Indiana Street, the previous night and demanded cash. A 22-year-old restaurant employee had placed bills and coins from the cash register in a bag and handed it to the suspect, who was carrying a small-caliber silver handgun. The suspect had then shut the employee into a walk-in cooler before leaving the building. A witness near the restaurant at the time reported to police that the robber had entered the passenger seat of a 1970s Toyota car and had been driven away by another person.
  • Prospective city employees would be required to undergo drug testing and current city employees could be subjected to the screening for “probable cause,” under proposals made to city commissioners today. City Manager Buford Watson’s “Report on Drug Issues,” presented earlier this week, detailed three areas of concern: increasing citywide awareness of potential drug abuse in Lawrence; studying programs used by private employers in the city; and determining programs the city could institute for its employees.
