Thunderstorm leaves 500 without power in Douglas County; more strong winds forecast

A Wednesday afternoon thunderstorm left about 500 customers without power in Douglas County, according to Westar Energy.

Erin La Row, a spokesperson for Westar Energy, said she was unsure when power for most of the customers would be restored. The company’s approximate tally as of 6 p.m. Wednesday was 503 customers. By 7:30 p.m. that number was down to 175, but it went back up to 267 by 10:30 p.m. La Row said wind and lightning were “big contributors” to the outages.

Westar’s outage map showed several spots in eastern and central Lawrence with power issues, with a few others scattered across the rest of the city.

The storm, which the National Weather Service expected to produce wind gusts around 60 miles per hour, struck Lawrence at 4 p.m. and subsided within a half hour.

Another round of strong thunderstorms arrived by 9 p.m. Wednesday, and the NWS advised it could produce winds of 55 miles per hour.

The NWS advised that, through 9:30 p.m., a line of thunderstorms would move east at 40 miles per hour across northeast Douglas County. The storms could produce pea-size hail, heavy rain and frequent lightning, NWS said.

Southeastern Jefferson County is also subject to those conditions.
