City, firefighters union mum about contract negotiations ahead of budget vote

As commissioners are set to approve the city’s 2015 city budget, details about a pay raise for the city’s firefighters are few and far between.

Both city officials and a leader with the firefighter’s union declined Monday to provide an update on contract negotiations. City commissioners at their Tuesday evening meeting are set to approve on first reading the city’s 2015 budget.

The proposed budget includes a 1 percent general wage adjustment for firefighters, but the International Association of Firefighters Local 1596 objected to the proposal and reopened its labor contract in May. In July, firefighters union officials said they think local firefighter pay is about 8.5 percent below that of peer cities. City officials disagreed with that analysis, and said they intended to stick with the 1 percent raise.

At that point, the two sides declared the negotiations at impasse and agreed to take their dispute to a federal mediator. The Journal-World asked for an update on the negotiations Monday morning, but was notified by city officials at about 5 p.m. that an update wasn’t yet available.

It wasn’t clear why an update wasn’t available ahead of Tuesday’s budget vote, but the city and the firefighters union have agreed as part of the negotiation process to issue only joint statements.

The firefighters union has a labor contract with the city through 2015, but a clause in the contract allowed for negotiations to be reopened on matters of pay. Commissioners will vote on the budget at their 6:35 p.m. meeting Tuesday at City Hall.
