40 years ago: Lawrence airport expanding commuter flights

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 4, 1974:

  • Lawrence Aviation Inc., based at the Lawrence Municipal Airport, announced this week that it would expand its commuter services to Emporia starting this week. Bob Custer, director of operations, said five flights would start at Emporia, land at Lawrence, and then go on to Kansas City. The service was also boosting its scheduled Kansas City commuter flights from 10 to 14 daily. Commuter passengers had reached a high in April of this year of 1,023, Custer said, and had maintained a steady level of more than 900 passengers a month since then.
  • A fund drive to raise $10,000 for the first year’s operation of a Lawrence Junior Achievement program was getting under way this week with a breakfast at the Eldridge House. More than 30 Lawrence business leaders were invited to attend. Dennis Barritt, assistant vice president and trust officer at Douglas County State Bank and drive chairman, said it would take $10,000 to provide a facility and program for the first year’s operation. A site had not yet been selected for the Lawrence program, which would offer “in-depth exposure” to business for high school students.
