Lawrence rape suspect arrested in Oklahoma

Carlton Grass

A rape suspect who Lawrence police have searched for since early July was arrested Saturday in Tulsa, Okla.

Carlton Matthew Grass, 52, is wanted on a warrant for rape, stemming from a June 15 incident in downtown Lawrence. He was spotted Saturday by a retired sheriff’s deputy, according to an arrest report by the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office.

The report said that after the retired deputy alerted authorities, an officer questioned Grass about his identity. Grass provided the name “Smokey Eagle” and said he was from North Dakota.

The Lawrence Police Department said Grass goes by several aliases, “Smokey Eagle” among them.

The report said the officer eventually found a wanted flyer out of Lawrence with a photo of Grass and a list of aliases. He was then arrested on suspicion of false impersonation, fugitive from justice and rape.

Lawrence police said Grass is believed to be a transient man who has stayed in homeless shelters in the past.

No information on Grass’s extradition to Kansas was available Sunday.
