40 years ago: Two firms not in compliance with city affirmative action requirements

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 3, 1974:

  • Two of the 69 firms doing business with the city had failed to take affirmative action toward hiring more minority employees, City Manager Buford Watson announced this week. Watson said 56 of the businesses had demonstrated adequate progress and 11 were “not certified” because they had not yet provided enough information to the city human resources director and equal opportunities officer. The two firms not complying with the city affirmative action requirement were BRB Contractors Inc., Topeka, and the Waterous Co., St. Paul, Minn., which supplied fire hydrants. Under the ordinance, the two companies were not to be awarded city contracts unless they came into compliance.
  • A request for consideration of a four-way stop at the intersection of 23rd and Kasold was among items on this week’s agenda for the Lawrence Traffic Safety Commission. Currently, Kasold had a stop at 23rd, but 23rd was not stopped. The intersection had been the scene of a fatal collision on July 1. Also on the agenda was a request to consider traffic controls at Eighth and Elm and a request to remove parking from a portion of the east side of Connecticut between 14th and 15th streets. Also scheduled were preliminary discussions of bicycle paths and problems involving shrubbery obscuring drivers’ vision at intersections.
