100 years ago: ‘Old time baseball spirit’ revived in Lawrence as Twilight League reorganizes

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for August 1, 1914:

  • “The old time Baseball spirit is again aroused in Lawrence and the Twilight League has again been organized. At a meeting last night at Carroll’s News Depot representatives from teams who wish to get in this league were present and re-organized the league…. In this newly organized league there are four teams and each team will play two games each week. The teams are Printers, Y. M. C. A., Street Car Conductors and Haskell. They will use the Woodland Park and the Haskell diamonds…. It has been some time since Lawrence has had a Twilight League as it was broken up early last fall and there seemed to be little interest taken in the proposition this summer. But the baseball spirit must come to the top some time and it has now burst forth in full bloom.”
  • “After checking over the names of the men who had signed for stock in the Country Club at the meeting last night it was found that there were 13 more than the required number to permit the permanent organization, and steps were immediately taken to advance the organization. It was considered by the members that the membership was not yet large enough as there were still a great number of men in Lawrence they wanted in the club. The campaign for members will be kept up until the charter is drawn up…. The committee that was appointed to look after the location for a Country Club are out this afternoon looking at a number of places so that when it may come time for formal action in locating the club they will have in mind a number of desirable places. There are several places near Lawrence that will make excellent locations and no doubt the committee will get the situation pretty well in mind today.”
  • “The First Regiment Band will give its usual good concert tomorrow night at Woodland and the people of Lawrence can well take advantage of these fine concerts that are being rendered this summer. Lawrence has a beautiful park and the band is playing some excellent music.”
  • “Last night the South Side Improvement Club held another meeting over Holloway’s Store similar to that of Wednesday night. The purpose of the meeting was to further consider the interests of the people relative to the controversy of the School Board in selecting the architect for the new school buildings for which bonds were voted two months ago. It was agreed that the matter be checked to the attorney general and his decision is to be considered final. There is a serious deadlock between certain members of the board and for some time it has been known that the members of that body cannot agree.”
  • “The German government in an ultimatum to Russia asked her to suspend mobilization within twelve hours. In the demand sent by Germany to France, Germany requires France to inform it within eighteen hours whether in case of war between Germany and Russia, France will remain neutral.”
