KU softball shut out in 7-0 loss to Bears

? Two Baylor pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout, and the Bears rapped 10 hits off a pair of Kansas University pitchers in a 7-0 Big 12 softball rout of the Jayhawks on Friday at Getterman Stadium.

Starter Whitney Canion (20-9) allowed three hits over four scoreless innings, and reliever Liz Paul finished with three no-hit innings.

“We’re facing an All-American and national team pitcher, who is phenomenal and has been for several years,” KU coach Megan Smith. “I thought that we had some good at-bats against her. We didn’t score runs off of her, but we had good at-bats, which I was pleased to see.”

Maddie Stein went 2-for-3 for the Jayhawks (29-17 overall, 3-7 Big 12). Lily Behrmann had Kansas’ only other hit, a double.

Junior Alicia Pille (10-6) took the loss for KU after allowing six runs — all earned — off nine hits over four innings. She walked three and struck out two.

Reliever Sophia Templin allowed just one run off one hit over the final two frames.

“I thought Sophia did great,” Smith said. “She kept them off balance and showed them something different. They were hitting Pille pretty hard, so we thought showing them something different would work, and it did. I was pleased with Sophia’s performance.”

No. 14th-ranked Baylor improved to 34-12 and 7-4.

The teams will continue the series at 3 p.m. today. The game will be televised live on FSN, which is available locally on WOW! Cable channels 36 and 236.
