LHS softball mounts 10-run rally

? Lawrence High’s softball team had a 10-run rally in the seventh inning against Olathe North and salvaged a split in its two games Tuesday. The Lions lost to Olathe Northwest, 8-7, in their first game before beating Olathe North in their nightcap, 22-8.

LHS led 9-8 after five innings against Olathe North before senior Kristen Gile expanded the lead with a two-run double in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, the Lions had a 10-run outburst on 10 hits, highlighted by a bases-loaded triple from junior Morgan Byrn, RBI singles from Gile and junior Kenzie Garvin, and an RBI double from senior Andrea Mills. Junior Megan Sumonja earned the win, allowing three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings.

In the first game against Olathe Northwest, an RBI single from Byrn and a sacrifice fly from junior Jolona Shield helped the Lions take a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning. However, Olathe NW scored six runs in the bottom half of the frame. LHS tied the game on an RBI single from senior Marly Carmona, but the Ravens put a run across in the bottom of the seventh for the walkoff victory.

The Lions (8-4) will play host to Leavenworth for a doubleheader starting at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday.
