City urging motorists to avoid 23rd and Louisiana area while crews repair fiber optic line

Lawrence motorists are being urged to avoid the 23rd and Louisiana area on Wednesday morning.

Construction crews replacing a waterline in the area have struck an AT&T fiber optic cable. The resulting repair work has snarled traffic in the area.

The city’s Utilities Department reports that left turns onto Louisiana Street aren’t currently being permitted, and westbound traffic on 23rd Street has been reduced to one lane.

City officials are recommending motorists use 19th Street in order to avoid the area. The city doesn’t yet have a timeline for repairs to be completed but expects to know more later Wednesday. AT&T customers in the area, though the number is unknown, are affected by the cut fiber line.
