40 years ago: Legendary KU band director honored at final concert

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 23, 1974:

  • A resolution honoring a long-time Kansas University band director was passed by the Lawrence City Commission this week. The proclamation of “Russell Wiley Day” in Lawrence was read at the conclusion of an afternoon concert by the KU Band, conducted for the last time by Wiley, who was planning to retire in August. Wiley’s final job as band director was to direct the Midwestern Music and Art Camp, which he had founded, for the final summer. Tributes to Wiley poured in during the day as Gov. Robert Docking presented him with a citation honoring his efforts at KU. Reviewing Wiley’s history, Docking said, was “tantamount to reflecting upon the history of music at KU.” He added that Wiley, who had become Director of Bands in 1933 and had founded the Camp three years later, had “in one way or another directly influenced the music education of more than 50,000 high school musicians in addition to the tens of thousands of KU students who have received his guidance.”
  • A top energy official had pessimistic words this week about gasoline prices for the summer season. Federal energy chief John C. Sawhill said he expected gas prices to go up a few more cents and to level off at about 60 cents a gallon this summer. (Current average gas prices across the nation were about 53 cents a gallon for regular and 56 cents for premium.) Sawhill also urged states to retain the new 55 mile an hour speed limits, saying the lower limit saved energy and lives and “should become a permanent part of our way of life.”
