25 years ago: Preliminary plans released for new Lied Center

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 23, 1989:

Kansas University today released preliminary architectural plans for the Lied Center, the new performing arts center that was expected to be a major resource for Lawrence and the entire state. An artist’s rendering of the $13 million structure, reproduced on today’s front page, showed a four-story building with a brick and stone exterior. Designers said the center would have state-of-the-art features, acoustics, and accessibility. “A lot of people have asked me, on and off campus, are we going to get the kind of building we’ve been hoping for,” said Peter Thompson, dean of KU’s School of Fine Arts and head of the building planning committee. “And I think the answer is resoundingly yes.” The center had an expected completion date of 1992.
