Lawrence not known for its early risers

People in Lawrence apparently like to hit the snooze button.

According to census data, 8:15 a.m. is the median time people here show up to work, about 20 minutes later than the national average.

Nate Silver, founder of the popular FiveThirtyEight blog, culled that factoid out of the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. It may be worth noting that he posted that story at 7:01 a.m., although he also admits he was doing it from home.

Silver notes that college towns like Lawrence tend to be noted for being a little tardy. Provo, Utah, and Ann Arbor, Mich., were both tied with Lawrence.

New Yorkers, on the other hand, set the standard for lateness with a median clock-in time of 8:24 a.m. That means half the people show up before then, and half come in later.

Military towns, naturally, tend to get a jump start on others. Folks in Hinesville, Ga., beat almost everyone to that first cup of coffee, clocking in at 7:01 a.m.
