U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary offers free boating safety class

A free, one-day boating safety course will be open to the public one Saturday in May.

The class, taught by members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, will include topics such as boat types, trailering, boat handling, navigation rules, boating emergencies and operator responsibilities. Successful completion of the examination at the end of the course will satisfy the educational requirement for those ages 12 to 21 to operate a motorboat, sailboat or personal watercraft in Kansas, though anyone of any age is encouraged to attend.

The boating safety course will take place at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers offices at Clinton Lake, 872 N. 1402 Road, on May 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The class is free; however, the optional course textbook, “About Boating Safety,” is $15.

Registration by May 8 is required. To register, contact Pam Chaffee at pkchaffee@yahoo.com or 785-550-4074.
