100 years ago: New auto tax provides funding for road maintenance

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 19, 1914:

  • “As a result of the Kansas law fixing a tax on automobiles and motorcycles the county commissioners of Douglas county now have something like $1,625 to expend on the roads of the county in addition to the fund raised by levy for road building purposes. According to the figures of County Clerk Herman Broeker, Douglas county autoists paid something like $2,000 for the privilege of running their cars in this county the past year. A total of 436 auto licenses and 97 motorcycle licenses were issued in this county. The state collects 75 cents of each fee paid for an auto and 50 cents of the assessment made against the motor-bike.”
  • “The local wireless telegraph enthusiasts have organized themselves into a club to be known as ‘The Lawrence Radio Club.’ The club has organized for further study and experimenting with wireless…. Harry Ziesenis was elected president of the club, which will hold meetings in the Manual building every week. The club has not yet decided what the membership requirements will be, that probably will be announced a little later…. A wireless station has been installed in the Manual building and will be used by the club in the work. Stations at the various homes of the boys will also be available…. Mr. Zieseniss has managed a station of his own for several years and understands them thoroughly. He managed the construction of the station at the Manual school building. He said it would take him about a day and a half to put up the apparatus and everything was in readiness.”
  • “The University of Kansas is to have dormitories for its women students, if a plan recently launched at the meeting of the Women’s Good Citizenship League at Emporia is adopted. Resolutions were adopted at this meeting provided for an appeal to the legislature for the installation of dormitories. There has been agitation along this line in times past and now the club women of the state have taken up the proposition and expect to secure its adoption.”
