A Tonganoxie resident previously convicted of second-degree murder, as well as aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, has been charged in federal court with possession of child pornography.

Scott L. Meinert, 49, was indicted on one count of possessing child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Kansas. The crime is alleged to have occurred March 25, 2013, in Tonganoxie.

Meinert currently is in prison, according to Kansas Department of Corrections records.

He was convicted last May on one count failure to register as a violent offender as required by the Kansas Offender Registration Act, court records show. That case was in Leavenworth County District Court.

Meinert previously was convicted in Leavenworth County for second-degree murder and aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. Those convictions require him to register with the sheriff’s department for the county in which he resides. He was convicted in January 2000. Police said he fatally shot his wife, Wanda Meinert, on Aug. 7, 1998. Wanda Meinert worked as a Leavenworth County Sheriff’s dispatcher.

If convicted of possessing child pornography, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
