25 years ago: Bank robbery suspect appears in court

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 15, 1989:

  • A self-described unemployed cabinet maker stood in court this week in Douglas County after being arrested as a suspect in a local bank robbery. Peter Charles Gutierrez, 21, told Douglas County District Judge Jean Shepherd that he had been staying with his parents in Lawrence for the past 10 days. Gutierrez was suspected of having robbed the Lawrence National Bank branch at 2701 Iowa shortly after the bank had opened for business on Friday. At his court appearance just seven hours after his arrest, the judge set bond at $50,000 and ordered Gutierrez returned to the Douglas County jail to await the filing of criminal charges.
  • New projections for Kansas population trends showed Douglas County growing by about 25 percent between 1980 and 2000, a slower pace of growth than that projected for nearby Leavenworth and Johnson counties, which were each predicted to grow by more than 50 percent during the same period. The forecast for Douglas County was for a population of about 84,000 by the year 2000.
