40 years ago: More than 100 artists prepare for annual Art in the Park

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 12, 1974:

  • More than 100 local artists were to exhibit their work at the 13th annual Art in the Park show on May 5. Final details for the show were still being worked out at committee meetings. In addition to a decision by the Lawrence Art Guild to retain 10 percent of sales revenue from the exhibit, there were several other minor changes, according to Beth Glass, the show’s general chair. For one thing, exhibitors were to be allowed to set up their displays on a “first come first served” basis, Glass said, in contrast to previous years when exhibitors had been arranged in alphabetical order throughout the park.
  • Construction projects at Kansas University were humming along. Plans for the next few weeks included the placing of lettering of names on Nichols and Wescoe halls. Nichols Hall, KU’s space technology center, had awaited its lettering since early summer 1973, when it had been officially named after Chancellor Emeritus Raymond Nichols. Wescoe had been occupied since the previous August, but its dedication was coming up on April 20. In other KU construction news, a final planning fund request for an addition to Robinson Gymnasium and a preliminary planning fund request for a Malott Hall addition had been sent to the Kansas Board of Regents.
