Lawrence man flown to KU Hospital after accidentally shooting self in East Lawrence home

A 47-year-old Lawrence man was flown by a LifeStar helicopter to Kansas University Hospital after a firearm he handled discharged and struck his leg just before noon Thursday.

No one else was home when the gun went off in the man’s home in the 2000 block of East 19th Street, according to Sgt. Trent McKinley, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

McKinley described the injury as traumatic and said there were no signs of foul play. A LifeStar helicopter was called to land in a field across from the Lawrence Humane Society and near the Douglas County Fairgrounds. McKinley said the man reported the incident to emergency dispatchers around 11:54 a.m.
