25 years ago: Oldest living Haskell graduate honored today

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 7, 1989:

  • A woman believed to be the oldest living graduate of Haskell Indian Junior College was honored today in Topeka on her 100th birthday. Lenora Bourdon, who had been residing at the Glendale Manor nursing home for the past four years, had attended Haskell twice between 1910 and 1914. Her daughter, Marie Kreipe, also of Topeka, said that her mother had come to Haskell from the Potawatomie Indian Reservation in Mayetta after eighth grade.
  • Parking areas directly east of Lawrence’s city hall were barricaded this week as surveyors began preparing the area for construction of a $2.3 million parking garage. When completed, the two-level, 511-space garage was to serve both city hall and the Riverfront Plaza, the shopping mall under construction at the old Bowersock Mills site.
