TOPEKA ? Gov. Sam Brownback says a school funding bill before the Kansas House is a good plan for meeting a state Supreme Court mandate to boost aid to poor school districts.

The GOP governor Friday urged House Republicans to support the measure.

House leaders hoped the chamber would approve the bill late Friday, setting up negotiations with the Senate on the final version of a plan. Legislative leaders hope to send a bill to Brownback by Saturday.

The House plan would provide an extra $141 million a year in aid to poor school districts. The measure offsets the cost by trimming other parts of the state budget, so that it would increase total state spending by less than $50 million.

Brownback said the state can afford the plan.
