25 years ago: Neighborhood residents purchase tract to prevent development

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 4, 1989:

A group of residents in the Prairie Meadows neighborhood in southwest Lawrence had recently banded together to prevent an unwanted housing development in the area. The group had formed a corporation called Save Our Swamp Inc. and had made an offer to the developer and bought the 10 1/2-acre tract in question. Charles Brichford, 2609 Atchison, president of Save Our Swamp, said the purchase was a compromise with the developer, Golden Valley Inc. of Overland Park. In order to save the acreage, he said, residents had had to promise they would not oppose a different group of apartment buildings that would be constructed near the neighborhood. Brichford said the corporation had been formed by residents who were concerned the housing development would cause flooding and traffic problems.
