LHS golfer fifth at SMS Invitational

? Lawrence High senior Narito Mendez shot a team-low 80 and placed fifth on Monday at the Shawnee Mission South Invitational at Meadowbrook Country Club.

Mendez carded the third-lowest score at the season-opening tournament, along with two other golfers, but fell to fifth after ties were broken by comparing handicap scores.

The Lions finished ninth out of 12 teams with a total of 355, one stroke behind Free State, which placed eighth.

Junior Austin Kastl led the Firebirds with an 82 and placed eighth after tying for seventh and losing a scorecard playoff.

Corey Dillon (74) and Ryan Clatterbuck (77) finished 1-2 for Washburn Rural, which also took first as a team with 329.

LHS and FSHS play next on April 7 at the Shawnee Mission Northwest Invitational.
