Kansas softball sweeps pair at Fall Invite

Kansas University struck out 20 and allowed just one run in two games of a softball sweep of Cowley and Butler at the KU Fall Invitational on Sunday at Arrocha Ballpark.

KU beat Cowley, 9-1, and Butler, 1-0, in eight innings.

“Pitching and defense are incredible right now,” KU coach Megan Smith said. “Our pitching is really strong, and defensively we’ve made some really good plays. We made every routine play and made some unbelievable plays, too. We have a lot of dynamic players on defense, who are really athletic, and it’s good to see.”

KU recorded 12 hits against Cowley. Alex Jones went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore Chaley Brickey was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and walk.

Junior Alicia Pille struck out eight and retired 12 batters in order in the first game.

Against Butler, sophomore Kelsey Kessler struck out 12 and limited the Grizzlies to three hits.

Freshman Lily Behrmann was 3-for-3 against Butler and scored the game-winning run in extra innings.

KU will host Baker at 6 p.m. on Oct. 9.
