From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 29, 1988:
A strong overnight storm had brought 80 mph winds and golf-ball-sized hail to the area as well as 1.2 inches of rain for Lawrence. The storm had spared most of the city from structural damage, except for the K mart Distribution Center, 2400 Kresge Road, which had suffered damage to its 317,000-square-foot addition, then under construction. Scott Vath, project manager for the general contractor at the site, said that the wind damage had occurred between 6 and 7 p.m., when no one had been at the site. Vath said his company had been erecting structural steel at the location for about two weeks and had put about 10 percent of the steel in place. The $9.3 million project was scheduled for completion in the spring of 1989.
