25 years ago: Enrollment decline a success for ‘stabilization,’ chancellor says

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 28, 1988:

Kansas University officials announced this week that official fall enrollment on the 20th day of classes was 28,403, a decline of 317 students from the previous year’s total. At the state’s two other large universities, Kansas State and Wichita State, administrators were reporting an increase of students, with K State tallying up the largest fall enrollment since 1982. KU Chancellor Gene Budig said that the school’s administrators had accomplished a goal of “stabilizing” enrollment as part of a plan to ease pressure on faculty and increase the quality of academic programs. “For the first time in several years, the Lawrence campus has been able to respond effectively to legitimate student needs,” Budig said. KU officials this year had instituted new admission requirements for out-of-state students and had established earlier application deadlines for all students. Budig praised these efforts, saying, “More students have received the courses they need to make progress toward degree requirements.”
