LHS football rally comes up short at SMW

? Lawrence High football nearly toppled No. 1-ranked, defending Class 6A state champion Shawnee Mission West Friday afternoon at Shawnee Mission South District Stadium.

But after the Lions took their first lead of the game with less than two minutes left, Vikings senior receiver Andre Maloney burned LHS for two big plays, and SMW survived, 14-13.

The Lions (0-3) took the lead with 1:26 remaining by going for it on fourth-and-one on their own 38-yard line. Junior quarterback Nyle Anderson kept the ball on a naked bootleg and ran 62 yards, untouched, for the go-ahead touchdown that put LHS up, 13-7. However, SMW (3-0) blocked the extra point.

Maloney, a Kansas football commit, then returned the ensuing kickoff to the LHS 44, and later helped SMW complete the comeback with an eight-yard touchdown reception with just 13.4 seconds to go.

Senior Lions running back Drew Green capped a long drive with a two-yard score with 7:18 left in the fourth quarter, allowing LHS to tie the defending champs at 7.

The Lions play host to Olathe Northwest next Friday.
