From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 18, 1988:

• A citizens’ group in 1987 had presented the city a 2,800-signature petition asking officials to look into the merits of a municipal golf course for Lawrence. The Lawrence City Commission was scheduled to discuss the feasibility of a city course at their weekly meeting. At the recommendation of city staff, commissioners in March had hired THK Associates, a Colorado firm, to conduct a study and cash flow analysis, and they were to discuss the results of the study this week. No official action was expected at this stage. Speaking of the need for a municipal course, Stan Harris of the Lawrence Municipal Golf Course Committee pointed out that Lawrence was “the only city of this size in the state of Kansas and in the area to not have one. If we’re going to stay progressive, we need one.”
• Douglas County voters were to have an opportunity in the November election to show whether they supported county commissioners in their move to raise property taxes to finance the county’s general fund. Organizers of a petition drive had presented enough signatures to have a question about county taxing authority placed on the ballot.
