From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 17, 1973:

The owner of a local business had been killed overnight in a car-train crash. Cornelius Clark McHenry III, owner of the In Sight Tavern, had been driving his 1962 Lincoln southbound near what is now known as Midland Junction when he had been struck by a Union Pacific train traveling at an estimated speed of 60 miles per hour. A passenger in McHenry’s car, Nancy A. Byers, had suffered severe cuts and bruises and was reported to be in fair condition at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Although there was no railroad crossing gate mentioned in the article, the engineer of the eastbound train said that the train’s bell and whistle were sounding and the engine’s headlight and yellow caution lights were on. McHenry’s death was the ninth traffic fatality reported so far in 1973 in Douglas County.
