Lawrence police continue to follow up on a Sunday evening pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies and the escape of at least two suspects.

The pursuit began at 9:36 p.m. Sunday in the 1700 block of Harper Street after a Lawrence police officer attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation in addition to the license plate not being issued to the vehicle, said Sgt. Trent McKinley a Lawrence Police Department spokesman. The vehicle then fled from the officer northbound, turning east onto East 15th Street and leaving the city.

The chase continued east of Lawrence city limits before the officer halted pursuit after the vehicle continued down gravel roads at high speeds, McKinley said.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Kansas Highway Patrol and Eudora Police Department also assisted by preparing to deploy spike strips in several locations. At one location, a highway patrol trooper was struck by a bottle thrown by the passenger of the pursued vehicle as the trooper set up spikes. McKinley said the trooper did not sustain injuries.

The suspect then circled around on several county roads before attempting to re-enter Lawrence via East 15th Street and having all four tires of the vehicle taken out by a spike strip.

Occupants of the vehicle fled the scene on foot and are suspected of evading capture after being picked up by another vehicle, McKinley said. McKinley added that police do not have details to release on the suspects but are following up on leads related to their identities.
