25 years ago: ‘Buffalo’ sections arriving in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 15, 1988:

The future of the stone buffalo sculpture on Clinton Parkway began to arrive in Lawrence today, with pallets containing sections of the limestone creation scheduled to be delivered from Bayer Stone, Inc. a quarry in St. Marys which had donated the material. Local artist Jim Patti said that, weather permitting, a crane would begin to set the buffalo’s front and back legs in place later this week, followed by the body. Finishing work, including texturing work and the installing of the tail and horns, was to begin after that. Patti said that sculpting of the buffalo had begun in St. Marys four weeks earlier as part of a “team carve,” and that it would be completed by volunteers over the next several Saturdays. “This is a voluntary thing,” he said. “If you’re available, come on out.”
