Free State 2-1 in volleyball quad at SM Northwest

? Free State went 2-1 in a high school volleyball quadrangular Thursday night at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

The Firebirds defeated Shawnee Mission North, 25-18, 25-14, then fell to Shawnee Mission Northwest, 25-19, 14-25, 25-17, before defeating Shawnee Mission East, 25-19, 25-20.

Free State coach Nancy Hopkins cited the play of Paige Corcoran, Grace Miller and setter Lauren Johnson, who came off the bench to help the Firebirds.

FSHS (3-2) will play Saturday at the Lee’s Summit West Mo-Kan Tournament.

The Firebirds’ junior varsity went 3-0, defeating SM North, 25-16, 25-20, SM Northwest, 25-19, 25-16, and SM East, 18-25, 25-17, 15-8. The FSHS JV improved to 4-1.
